How to Add Skype Links to WordPress

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. Purchasing a product through one of these links generates a commission for us at no additional expense to you.

Did you know that Skype has its own link format? Take this link, for instance:

skype:echo123?call

This is a direct link to call a Skype user with the username “echo123.” Here’s a clickable version of that link: Skype call link.

If you have Skype installed, clicking that link will open up the Skype app on your computer, and on mobile devices, it will immediately initiate the call (“echo123” is a test account, not a real person).

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to implement these links in WordPress to let people call, chat, and add you on Skype right from your website.

The link format I shared above probably looks completely foreign, but the main difference between that link and a normal link is the protocol.

For example, “http” stands for hypertext transfer protocol and is used for webpages. You’re surely familiar with this protocol, and it’s the only one most people ever use. Skype has its own protocol called “skype,” and like “http,” it’s followed by a colon and then a target address, which is a user rather than a webpage in this case.

To add one of these links to your site, start by highlighting the text you want to link, and then click the link icon (or use the cmd+k shortcut).

Link Text

Inside the address bar, enter “skype:” followed by your username and “?call.” When you’re finished, click the enter button or hit the Enter key to save your change.

Skype Link

The link will look exactly like an ordinary link, but now visitors can click it to call you on Skype. This works just as well with the Button block if you’d prefer to use that:

Furthermore, you can add a Skype call link to your menu by including one of these URLs in a custom link:

And lastly, if you’re a Compete Themes user, all of our themes have been updated to allow Skype links in the Skype social media icon:

This gives you four different methods to add Skype links to your WordPress site, making it easy for visitors to get in touch any time.

Before you go, you might like to know all the different types of links you can create with Skype. Here’s a complete list of the actions you can trigger with Skype links:
