For superyacht crew who want to make the move ashore but can’t bear to leave the industry they love behind, an opportunity to stay in the sector and apply their skills and knowledge in a new way is the perfect answer.

Here at Gym Marine, we’re fortunate to have several ex-yacht crew amongst the team, and their first-hand experience and insight to the dynamic of life aboard a superyacht is a key part of our success.  That extra know-how goes a long way to helping us get it right.

Portia

Portia Scorer began with Gym Marine in 2021 as a Fulfilment Manager, supporting the sales team and handling procurement, logistics and operations. As the business grew, Portia was promoted to Operations Manager and whilst still responsible for many aspects of fulfilment, she oversees the team on a day-to-day basis and manages special projects.

“My yachting experience is of direct benefit to Gym Marine’s clients. I understand the pressure felt by crew to ensure they meet guest expectations, and the logistical problems of getting items to remote locations on tight deadlines. Good service, great quality, and clear communication are essential.”

Portia was introduced to yachting by her seafarer father and, growing up in Durban, South Africa, the sea was never far from view.  Her own yachting career began in Antibes, with a deck/stew position aboard a 49m boat. She secured her next job as a deckhand aboard a 57m and when that yacht commenced its winter refit, Portia turned her hand to helping with maintenance of the decks and engine room, which lead to her ‘big break’ and next role as a deckhand aboard a 60m, built by Proteksan Turquoise.

When Portia stepped back onshore, she returned to South Africa and first took a job as a travel agent, followed by a role as production coordinator and product developer with a fashion wholesaler who recognised the incredible work ethic Portia’s yachting experience had instilled in her. Having learnt about the manufacturing process, import and export, business administration, logistics and operations, Portia migrated to the UK and, fortunately for us, found Gym Marine.

“Gym Marine was the perfect option. It allowed me to apply my existing skillset in a different way, but also brought me back to the world of superyachts – when the company discovered I had been a deckhand and a stew, they were excited to bring this first-hand understanding into their business. My experience working within a shipyard, and the many people involved with the supply process, has really been an advantage to my work.” – Portia Scorer, Operations Manager, Gym Marine.

Portia finds job satisfaction in seeing the finished result of a gym space designed and specified by her colleagues, and is spurred on in her role by the repeat business received and positive feedback from clients. She says: “It’s true testimony that what we do is valuable, respected, and appreciated.”

DSC_4902-de56d721c319d318For Kayleigh Westgarth, who runs Gym Marine’s sister company Coral Spa Consultants, her earlier career in the superyacht industry was something of an accidental one.

“I had been working in a spa aboard a cruise ship when my CV was picked up by an owner’s rep, who then offered me a job aboard a large motor yacht,” explains Kayleigh. Kayleigh began as a stew and a masseuse, before finding her ideal role as a spa manager, and she went on to work aboard some of the superyacht world’s most iconic vessels including Cloudbreak, Lady S, and Flying Fox – for which she setup the spa suite during the yacht’s build.

It was this role with Flying Fox that prompted Kayleigh to make the move ashore and setup her own consulting business. Working freelance initially, she was quickly approached by Gym Marine who saw an opportunity for expansion, making Kayleigh’s expertise part of their business.

Kayleigh now runs Coral Spa Consultants, part of the Gym Marine Group, which focusses on the spa setup for superyacht new builds and refits, as well as supporting yachts with already-operational spas that want to diversify their treatment offering or vary their spa products.

Kayleigh’s experience in the wellness industry, and specifically her time aboard yachts, has equipped her with an unparalleled insight and understanding of the operational requirements and day-to-day management of superyacht spa and wellness areas.

Being able to remain in the yachting industry, though in a different capacity, is what Kayleigh loves most about her work with Coral Spa Consultants – the opportunity to learn a different side of things, and face new challenges within a relative sphere of comfort. “What I really enjoyed about working on yachts, was the people – having a great crew around me made the experience special, but I’ve been fortunate to find a very similar and supportive environment at Gym Marine. I’d been on boats for 12 years when I decided to move shoreside, and being able to evolve my skill set and apply it in a new way, helping to improve spa facilities aboard for other therapists, is fantastic.”

meet the team

Assisting Gym Marine’s founding partner and managing director Edward Thomas – who himself enjoyed a brief stint as superyacht crew – is Kelly Edwards.

Inspired by stories of seafaring adventures that she heard from friends who’d become yacht crew, Kelly decided to give it a go herself. Starting on the bottom of the ladder (fourth stew!) Kelly persevered and her diligent work finally attained her a chief stew’s position.

After eight years on yachts, Kelly found herself craving the stability of a shore-based role, and first worked as a House Manager and a PA within a family office before taking a job as an Executive Assistant to the Director of an interior design firm. Having relocated to Bradford upon Avon during COVID, when a similar role appeared as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Gym Marine, based in Bath, Kelly jumped at the opportunity.

Whilst Kelly had no experience of the health and fitness sector specifically, her background in yachting meant she understood the demands of life as yacht crew, and the high expectations of Gym Marine’s clients.

Having learnt to operate at an elite level and become adept at working in fast-paced, fast-changing environments, Kelly had all the experience that was needed, and she says this familiarity has been integral to helping her in her day-to-day responsibilities at Gym Marine.

For a company like Gym Marine, having team members that understand the workings of a yacht, can decipher a general arrangement plan, and appreciate the logistics of supply to and installation aboard a moving vessel, is a huge asset.

“I have to admit, I do miss waking up in a new place every day – that’s a great feeling – and the laundry room holds a strangely special place in my heart, there’s a certain therapeutic nature to perfecting the crease in the table linens! Working on superyachts brought me many incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, but when cabin life started to take its toll, I decided it was time to leave. No two days are the same at Gym Marine, and every project is different. This dynamic company is always striving to reach new heights and push the boundaries, and it’s incredibly inspiring to be part of that.” – Kelly Edwards, Executive Assistant, Gym Marine.

Gym Marine Group Sales & Marketing Manager, Megan Dickerson, talks us through her top picks of the latest equipment and the trends set to influence superyacht gym design.

The biggest trend for 2024 is the crew gym

We have seen this become an increasingly important consideration for superyacht owners and designers, particularly for yachts at the larger end of the scale where there can often be 20+ crew onboard.

Why invest in a crew gym? A dedicated crew gym gives the crew another space aboard the boat that they can use in their down time, and helps with general fitness, mental wellbeing, and crew moral. Whether it’s a defined crew gym space or a multifunctional area that can be transformed into a training space, with easy to transport and space saving equipment, it’s definitely high on the list for superyacht requirements.

My top pick of equipment for a crew gym include:

Technogym Bike

This bike is accessible for all users – a treadmill or a cross trainers can be a challenge for taller crew if the ceiling heights are restrictive. I also love the Technogym Bike’s Live subscription, which provides access to a range of live and on demand classes to boost crew motivation with guided workouts. The subscription also includes total body workouts for additional strength and cardio to follow on the console screen, which can be rotated and used for training off the bike.

Saltlick Crew Bench

The newly launched Saltlick Crew Bench (pictured above) has been specifically designed for marine environments. The space saving design makes it ideal for a crew gym, use on deck or on the dock. It allows up to seven users to train at once, encouraging crew to train together for additional motivation and providing a social aspect. There’s even a QR code for guided workouts, and it’s been made by crew for crew. Perfect!

New gym equipment and gadgets for 2024

Keep up with the in-crowd (and the fit crowd) with 2024’s new additions to the gym equipment market. Lots of manufacturers have released new models and at the higher end, these have some great customisable features.

For owners and their guests, the aesthetics of an onboard gym space are becoming a higher priority. With luxury equipment in natural woods from the likes of NOHrD and Paragon Studio, there’s no excuse for a gym not looking as styled and polished as the rest of the boat.

Customising equipment with details like adding the yacht’s logo on the dumbbells, or powder coating cardio and strength equipment to match the yacht’s colour scheme, are also popular options.

When it comes to new equipment pieces, my favourites are:

Life Fitness Integrity+

The Life Fitness Integrity+ range offers commercial grade equipment paired with their SE4 console for a more immersive training experience. They’ve been mindful of ceiling heights and operational footprints as well, with the treadmill step-up just 20.3cm.

I’m excited about the upcoming launch of the Life Fitness Symbio line, too. This range will feature a more luxurious design, customisable features, and advanced technology.

Stil-Fit Luxury Functional Trainer

The Stil-Fit Functional Trainer has been extremely popular for our gym designs due to its beautiful mirrored finish, customisable height, and variety of movements that can be performed. The latest model features fully mirrored sides and an integrated lat pull unit.

INTEGRITY PLUS_Tread SE4_24inch_Matte Black_SIDE_3000 x 3000_mr

Technology in gym spaces is getting clever

Technology is leading the way, and we are seeing an increased demand for high-tech audiovisual integrations in superyacht gyms. Users want to link to 3rd party training apps from machines so they can track their training from wherever they are via platforms like Strava and Zwift. This is a popular feature on the Technogym Domestic Line of equipment, like the Technogym HIIT Run and Technogym Ride.

Flooring that fits the bill

Who knew gym floors could be such an interesting topic?!

Many of our projects in 2023 saw requests from shipyards who sought to outfit a gym space with a more architectural style sports floor. This is a trend that we warmly welcome, as we recommend installing gym floor throughout the space to create a multifunctional training area that allows users to train wherever they wish, as well as additional protection for the equipment, user, and deck!

The technology for gym flooring has come a long way, making it functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. We regularly recommend and specify Ecore – it has options for a variety of spaces, along with multiple design and finish options, and this luxury flooring provides a seamless finish through the guest areas.

The wellness hunters

Across the whole fitness industry, the importance of recovery is now as high as fitness and training itself, and this movement has transferred over to yachts as well. People are chartering superyachts specifically with wellness in mind, and that means everything from massage guns and compression therapies to holistic spa spaces and treatment rooms.

For superyacht designers, this has led to development of the wellness deck, where gyms, spas, saunas, and treatment rooms reside in one place and often utilise both the interior and exterior of that deck.

I work closely with Kayleigh Westgarth, who runs our sister company Coral Spa Consultants, to offer our clients a better integrated gym and spa, creating a total wellness sphere for training, recovery, and relaxation.

Gym Marine is delighted to have sponsored the training programme of superyacht industry professional Jo Assael, in advance of his participation in the RORC Caribbean 600 this February.

“When Jo sent us an email asking for advice on the best equipment for him to train with, and how he could fit that training around a busy job and travel commitments, we knew we had the expertise to help,” explains Gym Marine managing partner, Ed Thomas.

Jo’s day job is as Yachts Commercial Director for IRI/Marshall Islands Registry. A well-known face in the superyacht sector, having worked with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, and Döhle Yachts, the team at Gym Marine are excited about helping Jo achieve his goals.

Jo will be joining a team of yacht racing professionals aboard SY INO NOIR for the famous offshore race, where he and his crew mates will be sailing alongside a fleet of 55+ boats.

“I am the only amateur sailor on the team!” says Assael. “I know my way around a boat, but this is a bit different. INO NOIR is a brand-new 45-footer designed by Carkeek and the team has big ambition. Getting myself in shape for this role, joining the crew as grinder, is essential.”

Gym Marine recommended Jo start putting his muscle to the metal with a Technogym Excite Top Upper Body Trainer, and were pleased to provide him with the equipment. “As well as the cardio workout, this piece of kit offers upper body rotary training – there’s nothing that can more closely replicate the role of a grinder and deliver both muscular strength building and endurance,” comments Thomas.

Stay up tuned to Jo’s progress with video updates across our Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn profiles.

In October 2023, Gym Marine celebrated a momentous milestone as it entered its 10th year of trading. Founder, Ed Thomas, has taken the company from strength to strength since 2014, with their gym designs and equipment now featuring on over 60% of the top 100 largest superyachts.

Over the past nine years, Gym Marine have worked on over 450 superyacht gym projects, ranging from full custom gym design for new builds and refits to charter equipment rentals. Gym Marine works alongside the world’s leading fitness brands as well as creating bespoke equipment for yachts made from premium materials with unique customisation and branding.

Ed Thomas, Founder

Ed Thomas founded Gym Marine in 2014, following a career in yachting. He recalls the frustration of having to repeatedly polish a set of corroded dumbbells aboard the yacht he was working on, and it was that which prompted him to find the solution. It wasn’t all plain sailing – his first endeavour to sell a rowing machine to a superyacht left him 17 Euros out of pocket, but today Gym Marine’s annual turnover is in excess of £3 million.

Since its inception, Gym Marine has expanded into the luxury residential and commercial sectors with many of these projects commissioned by yacht owners seeking the same bespoke, high specification gyms for their residential properties.

Gym Marine is headquartered in Bath, UK, and in 2019 opened their first overseas subsidiary in Amsterdam, whilst the latest hub in Fort Lauderdale began trading in January of this year.

One of Gym Marine’s biggest projects to date saw them outfitting over 20 oil and gas carriers for BP Shipping, providing a valuable insight into the importance of quality exercise facilities for crew welfare. They continue working to improve the science and planning that go into crew gym spaces and have nominated Saltlick Fitness as their crew wellbeing partner. This collaboration offers SaltLick Fitness’ specialised crew fitness programmes as an optional extra to any yacht or crew working with Gym Marine.

The most recent addition to the Gym Marine Group is the launch of sister company, Coral Spa Consultants. This strategic move to provide a more holistic wellness offering to clients has already proved extremely popular.

Gym Marine have spent their first decade firmly establishing themselves as market leaders; building on their brand and expertise, forming strong relationships with key stakeholders in the industry, from shipyards and designers to owners’ representatives and crew. Over the next decade, the company aims to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, and improve further on the service they offer.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all our clients and suppliers who have trusted and supported our business over the past nine years. I could not have imagined when I first started the company, whilst working as yacht crew, that we could achieve such a strong reputation within the industry and a raft of high-profile repeat clients. I am hugely grateful for my team, and in particular my business partner Guy Royffe, for all they do and the brilliant culture we have created at Gym Marine over the years. We are excited to see what the next 10 years have in store.” – Edward Thomas, Managing Director of the Gym Marine Group.

Geoff Moore – Managing Director, West Nautical

I would like to congratulate the team at Gym Marine on ten years of trading.
We at Superyacht Technical Services Ltd have used Gym Marine for many years on many projects. We are able to rely on Gym Marine to assist with all aspects at all stages. It is a joy to work with a professional company that are there if and when things go wrong and not simply sell, supply and forget! Many thanks for all your assistance over the years.

To round off another exceptionally busy month, the Gym Marine Yachts and Interiors team will be attending the ever fabulous Monaco Yacht Show, which takes place from 27th – 30th September.

Directors Edward Thomas and Guy Royffe are looking forward to catching up with familiar faces and meeting many new ones to chat about some of our most recent projects as well as exciting new product launches and development.

Ed and Guy will be joined this year by Kayleigh Westgarth, who is heading up our new spa brand sister company, Coral Spa Consultants, allowing us to create a holistic wellness experience on board.

This year is particularly special for the Gym Marine Group as we move into our 10th year of trading on the 1st October and we are thrilled that there will be a number of superyachts in show featuring gyms we have designed and implemented during that time.  Here’s a preview of just some of our work to look out for….

Polar Star – Gym Marine were heavily involved in redesigning the gym on board the 63m Lurssen expedition yacht when she underwent an extensive refit in 2016 and have provided ongoing support throughout her worldwide cruising. Her ice-class hull gives her access to remote parts of the world that are not typically frequented by most yachts.

Alunya – This 49.9m Benetti yacht is one of 15 in the B.Now 50 semi-custom series and was delivered in 2023. The gym was designed for a space known as the ‘adventure room’ and the Gym Marine team had to work with restricted dimensions, low ceilings and alcoves. A formula has been implemented to maximise workout potential in unconventional and limited spaces, which can now be repeated on future projects.

KENSHO (Photography by Christopher Scholey)

Kensho – Delivered in 2022 by Admiral – the Italian Sea Group, 75m Kensho won Motor ‘Yacht of the Year’ at the 2023 World Superyacht Awards. Instantly recognisable with her striking blue-green hull and flowing lines, the owner of Kensho (from the Japanese word meaning “seeing one’s true nature”)  was heavily involved in her build, which took six years to complete. His meticulous eye for detail can be seen throughout, not least in the gym with its state of the art and top end range of Technogym equipment.

Loyalty – This 49m Heesen was one of Gym Marine’s earlier projects featuring a range of clever equipment to fit custom made deck lockers on the sun deck.

Alchemy – Launched in 2023 and delivered by Italian shipyard, Rossinavi, Alchemy was clearly designed with relaxation in mind and is brimming with social dining and entertaining areas including a beach club and Jacuzzi as well as a fabulous spa with loose equipment linens and accessories provisioned by Coral Spa Consultants.

Entourage – Delivered in 2023 by Amels, Entourage features state of the art equipment and technology throughout and the gym is no exception. Gym Marine provisioned a range of equipment for the sun deck and beach club with a custom Multi Gym which was modified for lower ceiling height. It also features an interactive wall mounted mirror which opens up to reveal equipment.

Nero – Modelled after the J. P. Morgan Corsair, Nero was inspired by the Golden Age of the 1920’s and oozes the elegance and opulence of a time gone by. Her gym, however, is very much in line with modern fitness requirements and features top of the range Technogym equipment, with large doors that open up for indoor and outdoor training.  Our team were also involved in the multi-functional treatment bed for the spa room.

Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors have today announced a new offering in complement to their already industry-leading services, GM+.

GM+ is a carefully curated package of enhanced warranty support and on-going service provisions, which sees Gym Marine’s standard international warranty cover enhanced over two years with crew training, maintenance plans, an annual service, and remote support via video link from senior technicians.

Gym Marine+

“Building on our already industry leading services, this package of service and support has only been made possible as a result of our international logistical network and our excellent relationships with suppliers. The standard level of post-install support offered by Gym Marine to its clients I feel is already exemplary, but now we can enhance that and achieve a level of service that’s truly exceptional.” – Edward Thomas, Director, Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors.

GM+ can be purchased alongside any new build or superyacht refit project that Gym Marine are involved with and represents incredible value for money. Taking the offering of GM+ a step further, the company has also created a series of kits with spare parts to keep equipment in action while cruising offshore for extended periods, and mitigate the risk of long lead times for replacement parts.

Gym Marine is pleased to confirm that they already have two yachts signed and under contract with GM+, a 90m refit project, which is now operational again, and a 100m+ new build that will be launching in 2024.

“Our extensive experience on an enormous array of projects means we can pre-empt these risks, we know what parts get easily misplaced, and how to ensure seamless fault resolution for the crew, charter guests or owner. On a superyacht, having an item of equipment out of action, simply isn’t acceptable and we won’t let that happen.” – Ed Thomas, Director, Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors.

Whether it’s streaming Netflix while on the treadmill, participating in an online spin class, or listening to a relaxing playlist during yoga practice, the audio-visual aspects of a home gym impact the overall enjoyment and functionality of the space.

“Clients are accustomed to increasingly advanced home entertainment systems, and it’s important that a home gym lives up to their audio-visual expectations” advises Edward Thomas, Managing Partner of Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors.

AUDIO

The sound system plays a key role in a gym, as it creates the atmosphere and motivational energy. From an acoustic perspective, gyms tend to be harsh rooms with mostly hard surfaces, so producing clear and vibrant audio can be a challenge. Acoustic treatments on the walls help to improve the acoustic properties of the space, as well as isolate the noise coming from the gym.

It’s important to incorporate enough speakers in a gym to create a high sound pressure an overcome the background noise generated by the machines. As gym’s don’t typically have a single focal point, omni-directional audio is most suitable. Sum-to-mono combines the left and right audio input signals of the power amplifier to provide a mono signal output to the speakers.

Installing audio systems for multiple users is an increasingly common request in gym design. The easiest way to do this is by using Bluetooth transmitters so that each gym user can have their own set of headphones and select there preferred audio channel. To avoid headphones, it’s possible to install directional speakers aimed at each piece of equipment so that the audio can only be heard on that exact area.

VISUAL

From a posture and comfort perspective, watching a large TV screen on the wall of a gym while exercising is better than hunching over a smaller screen on a machine. As such, it is a good idea to talk to clients about whether they really want machines with in-built TV displays, as they will likely have a better viewing experience from a TV on the wall.

With any TV screen, it’s important to consider the view from all angles of the gym to ensure the TV can be watched from wherever the user is exercising. Various TV mounting solutions can be used to improve viewing flexibility, such as vertical lifts to adjust viewing height or drop-down ceiling lifts with 360-degree motorised swivels to allow for multiple viewing angles.

It is also worth finding out whether the client intends on using any specific fitness apps, as there are certain ranges of machines that link to specific apps via Bluetooth, enabling users to participate in virtual races and watch the content on the gym’s TV screen.

The aesthetics of the gym can also be improved by taking advantage of the latest technology and replacing traditional TV screens with Mirror TVs or micro-LED video walls.

CABLING

For clients that request machines with in-built screens, additional cabling will allow for the ultimate flexibility when it comes to machine connectivity.

There are three options for inputting external content into machines in a home gym environment: traditional television channels can be delivered to the machine via a coaxial cable; IPTV can be delivered via a CAT5 ethernet cable; and a select number of machines feature HDMI inputs, which will allow them to become part of the distributive AV system.

If it’s not possible to install additional cabling, then equipment selection is important. Typically, the top-of-the-range machines with in-built screens will have WIFI connectivity and their own operating systems with a basic selection of apps installed for streaming media content.

Coral Spa Consultants, part of the Gym Marine Group, will be managed by Kayleigh Westgarth and will allow the Group to expand its service offering and provide clients with spa design and specification services alongside Gym Marine’s successful gym design and equipment supply business.

Initial offerings from Coral Spa Consultants include a spa starter pack, which will allow any yacht with the necessary space and skill amongst its crew to offer massage and spa treatments to guests, without the need for a pre-existing or purpose-designed space.

Coral Spa Consultants will advise interior designers of the operational practicalities, they will provide expert design and specification, and manage installation, focusing on operational flow for a seamless onboard experience.  Coral Spa Consultants outfit spas with the most suitable equipment for the space, whether that’s a dedicated wellness area, a treatment room, or a portable massage setup.

The team will also support crew and onboard therapists with pre-launch recommendations for professional products, how to create a treatment menu, and provide ongoing training if required.

“With over 15 years in the health and wellness industry, I have worked on many prestigious yachts and was I responsible for setting up and managing the spa aboard one of the world’s largest superyachts. This first-hand experience of onboard spa use and guest requirements has helped me identify gaps in the market in terms of design and layout, as well as guest needs and the needs of the spa therapist.

When it comes to space planning for superyacht spas, the required storage space is often overlooked, causing last minute changes and disrupting the treatment flow. My goal is to commence these conversations earlier in the design stage, placing owner and guest experience forefront of the discussion – so that ultimately, the spa therapist can provide the level of luxury expected in these environments.” – Kayleigh Westgarth, Coral Spa Consultants.

Gym Marine+

“This is a very natural development for us, and we’re really excited about this new arm of our business. Kayleigh’s expertise in all areas of spa design and specification will allow us to offer a broader scope of services to our clients and design full-scope health and wellness spaces aboard yachts, as well as designing for private residences and luxury resorts.” – Ed Thomas, Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors.

Engaging Coral Spa Consultants for spa design and guidance will result in a perfectly proportioned, holistically designed space, which is equipped to offer the latest in spa trends and treatments and meet every owner and guest requirement.

Gym Marine is delighted to have nominated Saltlick Fitness as their crew wellbeing partner. This partnership will offer Saltlick Fitness’ well established, tried and tested crew fitness programmes as an optional extra to any yacht or crew working with Gym Marine on a new gym project, as well as those with existing Gym Marine-designed facilities and equipment.

Like Gym Marine, Saltlick Fitness was founded by ex-yacht crew who have years of experience working in health and fitness environments onboard superyachts.

“It is impossible for anyone who hasn’t worked at sea as yacht crew to understand just how challenging it can be to maintain a healthy physical routine during a busy season. This partnership between Gym Marine’s experienced team of gym designers and Saltlick’s crew fitness experts is the closest thing to a perfect match for yachts looking to invest in reducing turnover and improving crew wellbeing.” – Ed Thomas, Managing Director, Gym Marine.

“Saltlick are very excited to be given the opportunity to be partnered with the superyacht industry’s leading gym designers, Gym Marine. Understanding the need for crew to keep fit and healthy has always been at the forefront of Saltlick’s thoughts, and with Gym marine now in our corner yacht crew physical training can become something that everyone can get involved in!” – Tom Jones, Co-Founder of Saltlick Fitness.

Saltlick Fitness was founded by Tom Jones and Christie Surveson, two personal trainers currently working in the superyacht industry. The company provides both vessel specific group programmes for crew as well as customised individual programmes and online coaching to ensure people reach their goals.

The company was established to help those in the yachting industry maintain a healthy mind and body. The work/wellness ratio of life in yachting can be quite hard to maintain, with constantly changing of time zones, long hours, minimal down time, and space and equipment at a premium.

Being ‘yachties’ themselves, the team at Saltlick understands these factors and wants to both teach and inform fellow crew about how to maintain a healthy, well-balanced life onboard whilst understanding the importance of mental and physical health.

Practically, this will mean Gym Marine’s ongoing crew gym designs will be enhanced through sense checking by experienced yacht crew; and can be delivered along with bespoke individual and small-group training programmes delivered via a dedicated application which is now available to crew on both personal and shared devices.

We will look to develop this partnership, adding in more content and dedicated programmes around specialist equipment in the very near future. Watch this space!
